Tree of Life

Painting, "Three Ages of Women" by Gustav Klimt

Lyrics, "Tree of Life" by Jessica Creech
(written for a mother-daughter luncheon on 11-10-2009)
She closes her eyes and puts her hands over them
It’s too much to see
Flowers in her hair blush on her cheeks
Green vines in the air her baby’s sleeping

The leaves aren’t here to stay
The wind carries them away
Watch their beautiful decay

Oh roots you push on in
Deeper in your skin
Find where you begin

Wrinkled skin on bones he’s calling her home
But she’s looking back at all she ever had
Blue and velvet eyes are watching her sighs
And the space between a maiden and a queen

The leaves aren’t here to stay
The wind carries them away
Watch their beautiful decay

Oh roots you push on in
Deeper in her skin
Find where she begins

The child
The daughter
The sister
The mother
The woman
The crone
This flesh and bone
This great unknown
Wisdom cries in the streets

The leaves aren’t here to stay
The wind carries them away
Watch their beautiful decay

Oh roots you push on in
Deeper in your skin
Find where you begin
The leaves aren't here to stay
The wind carries them away
